Q & A with Dr. David Zielske

Question: New Code 10030

When would I use the new code 10030? Would I ever use it for the breast?

Answer

Yes, 10030 would be good for any subcutaneous or muscle abscess drainage, including thigh muscle, anterior abdominal wall, neck, etc., when imaging guidance and a catheter are utilized for the drainage. I would say the breast would qualify for a location outside the abdominal cavity (in the cavity is 49406) and not in an organ as described by 49405. There is no percutaneous “specific” code for abscess drainage, so 10030 is the recommended code.
